Sister Split (2004-07-12)
Ivy, 11, and her sister Lacey, 15, have always gotten along fairly well. Ivy even thought they liked each other. But she’s thinking that one over again. One night, out of the blue, Lacey tells her, “I hated it when you were born.” Say what? Ivy acts cool, but Lacey’s comment really hurt her. Why is Lacey being mean to her?

Everything else in her life is turning topsy-turvy, too. The same day that Lacey drops the bombshell, their parents have a big fight. Their mother, after giving their father the silent treatment for a whole week, finally decides to talk to him. Don’t take that new job, she says, or get out of the house. He decides to get out of the house. And Lacey goes with him.

What’s going on? Ivy is so sick of her parents fighting all the time that she doesn’t care if they do get divorced. But will it mean that she can’t be best friends with Susanna anymore? Ivy doesn’t feel comfortable talking to Susanna about the way things are. What will Susanna think about Ivy’s parents divorcing?

If parents can divorce, can’t sisters? Lacey wants to, but their parents want the girls to settle their differences once and for all. Ivy asks them if they are going to shut her and Lacey up in a room until they come out all hugs and kisses. Never give your parents a bad idea…

What happens? Will their parents really do such an awful thing? There’s a difference between garbage fights and compost fights. Which kind will Ivy and Lacey have?

— (…)Sister Trouble! (2004-03-26)
This story kind of reminds me of the realtionship I have with my own brother. In this book, there is an 11 year old girl named Ivy, and her older sister named Lacy. There lives became horrifying when they found out that their parents are going to get divorced. Their old friendship and bond broke.

Althogh Lacy seem to hate Ivy more than ever, Ivy still loved her sister and wished to get along very well once again. Lacy never got any nicer, because she was so furious at the thought of their parents getting divorced. One day, at a restaurant, Lacy announced that she wanted to get a divorce with Ivy. Ivy agreed but inside she was very hurt.

Lacy decided to live with her father while Ivy stayed with her father, and they would meet on the weekends. One weekend, Ivy lost her temper and they got into a horrible fight. Their punishment was to be stuck in one room together for a whole weekend. Eventually, they began to talk to eachother and told them how they felt when they were fighting.

They made a deal, to sacrifice something that really bothers eathother and they ended up getting along very well. Although their parent’s relationship didnt end up that way, they got over it, and began to live their normal life again. Only if my brother and I got along like that…Sister Split (2003-03-27)
This book was a great story, I just love american girl books! Sister Split is about a girl named Ivy, and her parents are getting a divorce. Ivy and her sister are shocked. So from there parents anger, they say that they are getting seperated too. Ivy’s sister moves out with her father, and Ivy stays with her mother. But when each child visits each other, they do horrible but funny things to each other. Ivy’s only comfort is her bunny and her best friend. If you enjoy a great story, and you are a girl 11-13 you should read it!! It was excellent!Sister Split (2003-02-0 8)
I loved this book! It really described the lives bewteen sisters and there divorced parents. It seemed like a true story, about what goes on in the lives divorced kids trying to solve there problems about the parents. It is about a girl named Ivy and her sister Lacy who mostly got along intill Lacy told Ivy “she hated when she was born.” Then there life gets awful when there parents decide to split up. They both start to hate each other, but sercetly Ivy still loves her sister. And doesn’t want her to live with her father while she is with her mother. But luckly Ivy has her best friend and her rabbit to keep her company. But soon after a lot of arguing bewteen them they solve there differences. It is a great and easy to read. I like it. It was funny about the fights they had and also gave me a great lesson to try to love your sister even if you have differences. I recommend it to anyone mostly a girl though. Try It and I am sure you will like it because I sure did!!

Parent’s don’t buy Gossip Girls!!! (2008-01-10)
What is going on? These books are supposed to be for what age group? I never thought I’d write a review but in this case I had to. If I could give Gossip Girls negative stars I would. Thankfully I read the book before I gave it to my daughter. I’m sick of authors writing about sex, drugs and vulgar language just because it sells. Authors need to start taking responsibility for what they write and how they are contributing to the moral decline in the youth today. If an author truly has talent, they don’t need to include the junk in it to sell their books. Maybe if this lifestyle she potrays wasn’t shoved in our kids faces via books/tv then teens wouldn’t think that’s the way it’s supposed to be. I wander if she’d want her young daughters reading her own books…gossip girls boxed set (2008-01-0 8)
My Daughter loves this series and was thrilled to get these books as a gift for christmas.A delicious series that will definitely give you something to talk about! (2007-09-29)
The Upper East Side used to be overrun with plastic surgery happy society women, and spoiled tots torturing their high-priced nannies. But times have changed. While these people still occupy a small portion of the sidewalks, they have been pushed aside for a new generation of beautiful people. Teenagers brought up in the lap of luxury, who spend their days buying overpriced La Perla undergarments at Barney’s, and indulging in frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity. But spending money isn’t all that’s on their mind. There’s always…gossip.

GOSSIP GIRL: Ever since the flawless Serena van der Woodsen departed from New York City to take up residence at a boarding school in Connecticut, sixteen-year-old Blair Waldorf has ruled Constance Billard School for Girls. As the daughter of a prominent lawyer turned gay, Blair has always gotten her way. And, with Serena out of the picture, was able to snag the gorgeous, green-eyed Nate Archibald for herself. Unfortunately, as much as Blair would like to deny it, Nate has always had a thing for Serena. A secret passion for the blonde-haired, blue-eyed beauty. And now with Serena back in the picture, Blair doesn’t know where their relationship will stand. So she has to take drastic measures…hand Nate her V card and he’ll be hers forever. The only problem is that Nate is a stoner who has a very short attention span, and even sacrificing herself to Nate won’t let him forget the passion he feels for Serena.

But he’s not the only one. Dan Humphrey isn’t your typical rich kid. For one, while he attends school with some of New York City’s most privileged, he actually resides in an apartment on the Upper West Side with his chesty younger sister, Jenny, and his eccentric writer father, Rufus. Dan is a dark, brooding poet, whose penchant for cigarettes and Folgers coffee crystals leave much to be desired. But, like Nate, Dan is infatuated with Serena. The only difference is that he has never so much as spoken to her before, and she doesn’t know he exists. Now that Serena’s off the A-List, and treading outcast waters, however, the only thing he can hope is that she’ll find her way to him and they can live happily ever after. In his dreams, of course. 5 stars.

YOU KNOW YOU LOVE ME: Everyone is in the midst of applying to Ivy League Colleges, but Blair Waldorf is planning a little something extra…her seventeenth birthday. Unfortunately, her mother has sprung a big announcement - she’s getting married to Cyrus Rose, and the wedding will take place on Blair’s birthday. So much for special days. Then there’s Serena, who is being constantly pursued by Dan, a disturbed poet with intense affections. Sure, Serena is used to being pursued by guys of all ages, but Dan is slightly creepy with his morbid poetry. Of course, Serena is a girl, and what girl doesn’t love having poems being written about her.

Although these teens are rich, obviously money can’t buy you everything. At least it can’t buy Blair Waldorf everything. For Blair’s seventeenth birthday bash is coming up, and she knows that the only thing that she can possibly wish for is Nate Archibald, her troubled, yet gorgeous, boyfriend, of course. But little does she know that while she’s sending out college applications, Nate is fooling around with Jenny Humphrey, a ninth-grader! Looks like Blair’s birthday is destined to be a blowout of epic proportions. 5 stars.

ALL I WANT IS EVERYTHING:

Blair Waldorf is having the worst time of her life. She has just completely flubbed her Yale interview, even going so far as to kiss her interviewer; she must contend with a dreadlock-bearing new stepbrother named Aaron, who seems to have some ulterior motives up his sleeve; her mother is marrying a loser whom she has known for hardly no time at all; and, to top it all off, Nate has ditched her for a chesty ten-year-old - well, she looks ten. Luckily, she and Serena van der Woodsen are back on speaking terms, and living it up as BFF’s once more. But who knows how long that will last.

The holidays are just around the corner, and with the Upper East Side absolutely freezing, everyone who’s loaded is planning on ditching their Marc Jacobs coats, and slipping into their Missoni string bikinis for a Christmas in a tropical place. With Nate Archibald having called it quits with Blair in order to take up a romance with freshman Jenny Humphrey, Blair is anything but ready to say goodbye to the city, and head off to St. Bart’s with Serena, where they can sunbathe topless, and, perhaps, have a winter fling. Unfortunately, Serena is being stalked by Flow, the hottest rock star on the planet - at least at the moment - and can’t seem to shake him off, and Blair, armed with her iBook plans on holing up in the hotel room writing the essay for her Yale application. Looks like this vacation won’t be as sizzling as originally planned. But with Blair’s new stepbrother, Aaron, and his pal Miles in tow, you never know when the sparks will fly.

Back in the city, Nate and Jenny are having the time of their life. But with Blair’s sudden appearances at every turn, Nate finds himself more and more drawn to the girl he has known and loved for so many years. But then there’s Jenny. Sweet, innocent, voluptuous Jenny. Maybe if Nate spent less time being baked, and more time being straight, he’d be able to decide who he’s truly lusting over.

Then there’s Jenny’s older brother, Dan. Since admitting their passion for one another, Dan and Vanessa have been having a whirlwind romance - albeit a dark one - filled with foreign films, cigarettes, strong instant coffee, and lots and lots of black. But since falling in love, Dan finds himself at a standstill regarding his poetry. Suddenly, he’s experiencing writer’s block firsthand, and it’s not a pretty picture. But when Vanessa supposedly does something that betrays both him and Jenny, he wonders if this is the push he needs to get his writing back on track - and to get even. 5 stars.

Let’s put it bluntly, Cecily von Ziegesar is a genius. She has taken the simple subject of rich, spoiled, troublemaking teens, and managed to produce a series that is both irresistible and infuriating. Each of the characters bring a sense of upper class to the table, along with a bit of scandal, and, dare I say it, trashiness. They have created a virtual playground of the Upper East Side, and dominate every hotel, club, or bar from Manhattan to Williamsburg. But they’re oh so delicious. Serena is carefree and easygoing, however, she possesses a selfless and tragic air that makes her irresistible. Blair, on the other hand, is stuck-up and pretentious, but she knows how to let her hair down. Unfortunately, she usually lets her hair down at approximately the same time that her claws come out. Nate is a bad boy in good boy’s clothing. His gorgeous looks make up for the fact that he has little between the ears due to how much of his time he spends high. Jenny and her older brother, Dan, on the other hand, are artistes who add a sweet touch to the series; and Vanessa manages to turn heads by brandishing her bald one. Each character converges together to weave an amazing story that leaves you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. A delicious series that will definitely give you something to talk about!

Geography Dictionary (2008-03-16)
I didn’t realize that this would be a straight-forward dictionary of some geography terms, but that’s what it is. My child never read it after flipping through once. It’s very boringgood introduction to geography and reference books (2005-10-22)
Being a glossary, this book is a dictionary of geography terms beginning with “archipelago” and ending with “zone”. Definitions are short and incomplete, but enough for the target audience of 7-10 year olds. The illustrations are bold and colorful.

See also “Maps and Globes” by the same team for the same age group.Great Dictionary Type Book! (2005-09-07)
We are homeschooling our 8yr old son. We wanted to make sure he had a good introduction to geography. As it turns out, He loves it! It’s definitions are easy for him to grasp and there are drawings to describe each term. If geography knowledge is important in your home too, I suggest you get this book.Fun book (2003-03-2 8)
Geography is a fun subject because it is so visual. This book has fun, brightly colored pictures that illustrate basic geography words. I found this little gem at a library sale years ago and have used it to help prepare my chldren for our homeschool association geography bees. They love this book too!Not just for kids! Adults love it too! (2002-07-1 8)
This book is really well done. Though it is targeted for children, this 40-plus year old found it very informative. After searching through the adult catalog at the local library for a book that would explain landforms and earth features and finding nothing, I found this book in the young people’s collection. It was a Godsend. I found it so useful, that I am now purchasing it for my personal library.

If you, like me, have never been clear in your own mind about the difference between a hill and a mountain; a mesa and a butte; a brook, creek, or stream; a river, lake or pond; a sea and an ocean; a canyon and a gorge, and on and on, then this book will painlessly de-mystify these terms for you and many more.

Thanks to the authors and publishers of this fine book, I am less dumbfounded by my physical surroundings, and at least know now what I probably should have learned in grade school

Good fast read. (2007-10-09)
If you’re and American Girl lover, you can keep the fun going with the Mystery novels.

Personally, I thought the “Mystery” was a little cheesy, even for ages 9 and up. In any case however, it was great to have the characters back to read about in a new story however, that is longer and different from the other Samantha stories.

The one thing that was lacking from this book was the phenomenal pictures American Girl books are famous for. If you ever just found the pictures distracting however, this book will not disappoint. An exciting, can’t-put-down novel for middle readers that will leave them searching for a mystery of their own to solve! (2007-02-0 8)
Samantha Parkington couldn’t be more excited about the prospect of her family moving into a posh, upscale apartment-hotel. Temporarily, that is. Sure, she’ll miss her home. But with all of the renovations currently taking place there, it has been impossible to get any peace and quiet. However, Samantha seems to be the only one excited about moving to Ravenscourt. Nellie and her younger sisters - Bridget and Jenny - appear to be petrified about the move. And instantly begin to think that this is simply Uncle Gard and Aunt Cornelia’s way of slowly displacing them from their newly adopted families. But Samantha knows that such a though is preposterous. Uncle Gard and Aunt Cornelia love all of the girls - even if they are rowdy and noisy at times. Upon arriving at Ravenscourt, however, Samantha begins to feel nervous about her new surroundings as well. After all, Nellie knows the owner of the apartment-hotel, and is aware of a horrible curse that was placed upon him years earlier. A curse that appears to be affecting how things work at Ravenscourt. The girls become terrified as they witness Ravenscourt succumb to one problem after another - from Jenny and Bridget falling ill with chicken pox, to rats in the building, and to Aunt Cornelia leaving the girls on their own with no one but Gertrude to look after them. Samantha begins to think that perhaps Nellie was right. Perhaps the curse of Ravenscourt is true. But Samantha refuses to begin believing in any curse until she has had the opportunity to do a little investigating herself. After all, the great Sherlock Holmes wouldn’t jump to conclusions about crime, and Samantha refuses to do so herself. Now, with the help of Nellie, she intends to get to the bottom of the curse of Ravenscourt. But the more she investigates, the more she realizes that perhaps detective work is better left to the police, or Sherlock Holmes himself, because it is a dangerous job; and both Samantha and Nellie are putting their lives on the line by getting involved in it.

Samantha has been one of my favorite American Girl characters since I was just a child, which is why I find it impossible to resist reading any of the new tales written about the precocious New Yorker. THE CURSE OF RAVENSCOURT is the perfect example. Samantha’s inquisitive nature is as strong here as it was in the previous novels about her life. Her interest in her surroundings, and her kindness towards those less-privileged than herself are refreshing; while her love for her newly adopted sisters - Nellie, Bridget, and Jenny - is enjoyable to witness. The four girls have such a powerful relationship with one another, and it is wonderful to see no sign of sibling rivalry. However, readers will feel sympathetic towards Samantha as she witnesses how much stronger the bond between Nellie, Bridget, and Jenny is when she is not around. The disappearance of Aunt Cornelia and Uncle Gard in this particular novel give it a bit of a more grown-up feeling, as the girls appear to have more free reign to sneak around, and conduct detective work; yet the few times their guardians come into play is quite enjoyable. An exciting, can’t-put-down novel for middle readers that will leave them searching for a mystery of their own to solve!

Freelance ReviewerAnother Favorite. (2007-01-09)
I read this and so did my grand daughter. She liked it so well, that she took it to school and they use this book as a reading book, to test on and to earn points for awards.Awesome (2006-10-03)
This book was really cool. It kept me in suspence. I thought this book would be boring, but it taught me to not judge a book by its cover. The Curse of Ravenscourt: A+++++++++ (2006-04-20)
Samantha looks up at the massive building. Outlined against the grey sky, the carved ravens stared down at her from the rooftop. “It can’t be cursed,” she told Nellie, trying to sound brave. But inside, she felt a shiver of fear.

“A Samantha Mystery: The Curse of Ravenscourt” is among Sarah Masters Buckey’s list of “succeeding whodunits yet.” Set in the year 1906, eleven-year-olds Samantha and Nellie, whom are the two main characters of the book outline, temporarily stay at the new apartment-hotel Ravenscourt, coordinated by Mr. Raven and his daughter Eloise. As both young girls learn not only of the somewhat quaint hotel staff, but also the omens of the hotel; blood on the elevator doors, eerie night sounds, and various moments of suspicion, they begin an adventure to capture the ruthless prankster behind the antics, which leads to discover his foremost intentions of the caper-making.

Speaking from my experience, this particular American Girl mystery book will thoroughly succeed in catching your interest in the midst of the plot; you will find it difficult to put down this thoughtfully written book! Mrs. Buckey did a fabulous job with the research of s?ance’ performances/ghost shows and historic Victorian hotels, proving this with her concise summary of “Looking Back: A peek into the Past.” Overall, I give this book an A+ and highly recommend it to any young, ambitious sleuths.
